The Seed of Knowledge
The eldest of five children, Floyd Shilanski grew up a military dependent. Living all over the world, Floyd attended more than 8 different schools before he graduated High School.
Friends came and left with each new rotation. More than once Floyd forgot where his bedroom was because he was never in one house long enough to memorize a floor plan.
Floyd learned most of his life lessons the old fashioned way, from the school of “hard knocks”.
But one lesson always resonated within him and that was when he learned that “Having money seemed a lot easier than not having money.”
In 1970 Floyd married his high school sweetheart, Rosa, and enlisted in the United States Air Force. His military career sent him across the globe but the moment he was stationed at Elmendorf Air Force Base in Anchorage, Alaska he knew that he had found where he wanted to call, “Home”.
It was the late 1970’s and Floyd was ending his military service and headed towards what he thought would be a career in the booming Oil and Gas Industry in Alaska.
Instead, he ended up meeting the late and beloved James Hokanson. James liked Floyd’s character, commitment to education and enthusiasm for helping people.
Mr. Hokanson asked Floyd to be his Financial Planner and when Floyd said, “Jim, I don’t know anything about money” Mr. Hokanson’s response would change the course of our family forever.
James looked at Floyd and said, “Learn”.
Learning is how we began our practice back in the 1980’s and today we remain dedicated to not only being in a perpetual state of learning but also passing along that knowledge to our clients.
It is our passion to help hard working families plan for their financial future.
And it is our honor to continue to do so for generations to come.
Nurturing the Seed
If you have taken the time to read this far than you know how we started our firm over thirty years ago, “by learning about money”. Now we would like to share with you what we did with that knowledge.
You see, we believe that to be in a perpetual state of learning you bare the responsibility to simultaneously pass on the knowledge you acquire.
What better place to teach than at schools?
We began teaching local Alaskans through a series of seminars entitled, “Strategies for Successful Money Management,” and “Financial Strategies for Successful Retirement” and, “Smart Women Finish Rich” and, “Bible Based Money Management”.
We taught seminars through the community schools throughout the 1990’s. Later we would begin to change the material for the classes and adjust to the demands of the “Roaring 2000’s”.
Today, we still teach classes throughout the United States but primarily in Anchorage, Alaska where we call home.
Our classes use a broad, generic approach about general subjects. What we discovered was that by the end of the class half of the room wanted a little more help.
That is when we began offering our one-on-one appointments for those who took the time to attend and complete our educational classes.
A Thriving Forest
In an economy when large retail companies generally consume small, family owned businesses we are proud to say that Shilanski & Associates Inc., thrives.
We believe that the reason is self evident… we have never forgotten where we come from.
We believe in serving humanity and helping people learn about money. By doing so it allows people to better plan for their present and future.
We understand family dynamics because…we are a family. We employ people who share our values and want to help others.
Our team goes above and beyond because to work within our organization is not a “job” but a commitment.
We are not the right firm for everyone but it is worth spending an hour with us to determine if we are right for you.
Now that you know why we do what we do, let’s discuss our philosophy and our process.
